About the NPMP Program

The Problem

In the last 10 years, there has been a proliferation of both FNP and PMHNP programs across the United States. This correlates with the increasing need for mid level providers in family medicine and psychiatry. More recently, studies have shown no signifiant difference or even better patient outcomes when care is provided by a nurse practitioner when compared to physicians in family medicine and outpatient psychiatry. Evidence based practice has made it possible for clinicians to treat patients in a more reliable and predictable manner.

Despite the availability of such evidence and standards in clinical practice, graduates from NP programs still face difficulties in transitioning from NP programs to clinical practice. In a non scientific survey, of the 50 NP's already in clinical practice for more than one year, 40 (80%) indicated that they would have benefitted from a post graduate clinical transition fellowship or mentoring program. Out of the 50 new graduate NP's who participated in the survey, 46 (92%) indicated similar potential benefits for a fellowship, residency or mentorship program. A fellowship or mentorship program will enhance employment chances for new grads and reduce their anxieties as they begin working in a clinical setting. Variable reasons may account for new graduate NPs concerns as they seek employment; however, the almost universal consensus is that a well structure, clinically rigorous transition program would benefit the NP and lead to better patient outcomes.

The Solution

A fellowship or mentorship program developed to specifically prepare nurse practitioners to transition from NP programs to clinical practice. Through a period of six months, NPs will gain the skills needed to move into the NP role with more knowledge and competence. NP's enrolled in the mentorship program will graduate after meeting specific criteria that demonstrates advanced clinical competencies for practice.

Family Nurse Practitioners  will be mentored  to the full scope of  their qualification including procedures, consulting children, adults, and geriatrics patients. Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners will be mentored to the full scope of their qualification, including treating anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, psychotherapy, referrals,  etc.
